There have been a few times here in San Diego recently where people have been revealed as veteran impostors. The most notable was the case of a man claiming to be a highly decorated Marine. He was wearing very prestigious medals and claimed to be a retired Major General in intelligence. He was a Marine, but got out as a Staff Sergeant after six years without the medals. He has since been arrested and is going through the court process.

It took the keen eye of another Marine to begin questioning this self proclaimed Major General and finding that facts were not adding up. This line of questions can be done very easily.

Military public records can reveal a wealth of information pertaining to the military service of individuals. These service records show what types of medals someone received while in the service. These files are usually accurate and revealing.

Other types of facts that can be shown are the duty stations a military member served in, which means the mplaces that they worked at. Also, you can find discharge information. There are many levels of discharges such as Honorable, General, Other than Honorable, Bad Conduct, Dishonorable, and Entry Level.

Another use of military public records is to investigate those close to you. This may be a potential employee, renter, doctor, even potential date, or anyone else who is a new acquaintance that is claiming to have a military history. As the story above shows, some people are simply not honest about these things. It is important to have tools that can illuminate these claims and verify them. It is vital that you know you can trust the new people in your life.

On a less serious note, there are ways to have some fun with military public records. This can be when you are outlining a family tree and want to know the service history of your ancestors. You may have famous Generals or medal of honor recipients in your family line.

Also, you can use public online records to look into famous people. This genealogy research can be done on celebrities or politicians who claim to be veterans. Who knows. You may be the one to find out something about a famous person that no one else had found before.
